December 8, 2004 – Week 12

1st Half Champs Are...
Congratulations to ALLEY OOPS!!  They've consistently topped the standings week after week, and defended their first place position to win the first half.

$10 Winners
The following bowlers went home with 10 extra dollars in their pockets, courtesy of Plaza Lanes, for bowling the highest over their scratch average last night.

  • Kurt Bowers, 91 over
  • Linda Marler, 86 over (recently returned from knee surgery, by the way!)
  • Norvin Cronk, 59 over
  • Ed Henderson, 53 over
  • Bob Olson, 31 over

To see a list of everyone's series averages and over average amounts, click here (.xls file)

High Rollers

  • Spirited competition this week seems to have produced a few more high scores.  200's this week go to Kevin Murphy (202 in Game 1 and 207 in Game 3), Bob Olson (206 in Game 1), and Norvin Cronk (202 in Game 2).
  • 199's go to Ray Card (both Games 2 and 3) and Kurt Bowers (Game 1).
Record High Jackpot Continues for Lucky Strike
The jackpot is rolling over again, and sits at $171. Next week if the same number of tickets are bought, it should reach $200!! Next week (Week 13) it will all be given away... if the first ticketholder does not get the strike, we will continue to pull tickets one by one to give more people a chance, until the jackpot is empty. So be sure to save your blue tickets next week till the end of the night.

Holiday Celebration Next Week
Plaza Lanes is relaxing their rule on "no outside food and drink" next week so that we can have a holiday celebration while we bowl. If you would like to do so, please feel free to contribute a snack or treat of your choice. (Eddie thinks he might make a nut roll. Or bake cookies, whichever.)

No Bowling December 22 and 29
We will be off a couple of weeks over the holidays.  Next week December 15 is Week 13, but Week 14 is three weeks after that on January 5.

December 1, 2004 – Week 11

Week 12 is a Big Week!
December 8 is the end of the first half, meaning it is yet another Position Round. The team in first place after bowling Week 12 will be the winner of the first half. Also, we will be "bowling for $10" courtesy of Plaza Lanes. Plaza checked our contract for this bonus, and it turns out that the $10 will go to the highest over average bowler on each PAIR OF LANES, not each team.

Splitsville
Guyla got the 3-10!!
June made the 5-10!!

High Rollers
Our "200" bowlers again this week were Kevin Murphy and Ray Card.  Kevin had a 226 in Game 1 and a 205 in Game 3. Ray rolled a 201 in Game 1.

Record High Jackpot for Lucky Strike Game?
At the end of the night, the jackpot was not cleaned out. $140 carries over to Week 12.  This is the second highest jackpot on record for our league in the three years that I have been logging the results. (The record was $151 last year on Week 9.) Someone win it already!!

A suggestion was made for next week to "bowl until it's gone". If the first ticket pulled does not get a strike, then pull another ticket to give the next person a try, and so on. What do you think?  Let Denise Goldie know next week when you sign up to play.

 December Birthdays
We've got just one to celebrate at the end of this month. Check out the birthday list to see who and when.

November 17, 2004 – Week 10

Reminder: No bowling next week (Nov 24).  We are off for the holiday weekend. Happy Thanksgiving!

November 10, 2004 – Week 9

"Bowling for Dollars" Coming On Week 12
For the second year in a row, Plaza Lanes is offering a $10 holiday cash prize in lieu of a turkey. (Last year, concerns had been voiced about whether or not the turkeys were staying frozen long enough on Delivery Day. So Plaza switched over to a cash award instead.)

The holiday award will be $10 cash, to the one bowler on each team who bowls the highest over their average for the night's 3-game series. Our "Bowling for Dollars" night will be Week 12, December 8, which is also our next Position Round and the end of the first half. It should therefore be a spirited competition for the cash award!

Splitsville
Denise Dunn got the 1-6-7 washout!  (Game 3, Frame 7)
Denise Goldie got the 5-10!  (Game 3, Frame 9)
Tip: If you make any tricky splits, be sure to write it somewhere on your score sheet to get recognition here!

200 Games This Week
Congratulations to Kevin Murphy for hitting at least 200 in each game. He bowled 222, 214, and 204 for a 640 series (61 pins over average).
Kudos also to Norvin Cronk for his 210 in Game 3.

November 3, 2004 – Week 8

Position Round Next Week (Week 8)
As always, subs are welcome but should be signed in as pacers. Their scores do help their own stats.

Who Is Your Team Captain?
One more week to think about it....!

Splitsville
Theresa Belser got the 2-7.

200 Games This Week
Only one this week.  Kurt Bowers bowled a 213 in Game 2. Coming close was Bob Olson with a 198 in Game 3.

Happy Halloween!!

October 20, 2004 – Week 6

Who Is Your Team Captain?
The Team Captains plus the League Officers make up the League's Board of Directors. The Board may be convened as needed to make business decisions for the league. For example, the Board approves the league's prize fund (which needs to be done by Week 12). Therefore, we need to know who the captains are. Next week on your recap score sheets, please indicate who your team captain is.

Splitsville
Kurt Bowers made the 4-7-10 and later made the 4-7-9.
Theresa Belser made the 3-10!!
Steve Marler made the 5-7!!

ABC/WIBC Honor Scores (and other merit recognition)
Kurt Bowers got an all-mark game. (Didn't he just do that a few weeks ago too?) Nice bowling, Kurt!

200 Games This Week
Just thought it would be nice to recognize people for the milestone of a 200-pin game. Good games, people!  Scoring 200 or more this week are:

September 29, 2004 – Week 3

Still Need a Bowler
Need a female bowler to join Team #9!

Reports have an updated look
I've installed new secretarial software and moved all information into it. Reports have the same information but with a newer format. Also, please note that the blind team (Team #10) has been correctly set up as a BYE team. They will no longer show up in the awards and will always be in last place in the team standings.

How to Beat the Blind Team
It's different. When bowling the BYE team, you are not competing against a dummy team average. Instead, you are competing against YOURSELF, using only your scratch scores. (See ABC/WIBC Rule #114c for details. The "bye" and "draw" systems are not specified by our league bylaws; therefore we are using a method to earn the points.)

  • To earn the points for a game, all bowlers should strive to bowl at least their absentee score. Or, the sum of your scores should be less than 30 pins less than the team average. For example, the averages for the bowlers on Team A are 138, 128, and 173, totaling 439. The sum of their absentee scores is 409 (i.e. 30 pins less). Therefore, to earn the two points for a game, Team A must bowl at least 409. Getting exactly 409 counts as a win.

  • To earn the one point for the series, the same "beat the absentee score" applies. Multiply the one-game absentee score by three to determine what score to beat for the series. For example, the sum of Team A's absentee scores for all three games is 409 x 3, or 1227. Therefore, Team A's scratch score for the series must be 1227 or more to earn that last point.

Splitsville
Dan Finkelstein got a 2-7 "baby" split!!
Bob Olson got the 3-4-6-7 split!!

ABC/WIBC Honor Scores
Kurt Bowers got an all-mark game. Not enough for an official award though. Tip: If you get all marks and alternate spares and strikes, you may be eligible for the Dutch 200 award

Position Round Next Week
It's our first position round of the season. Teams are matched by their position on the standing sheet. Remember, subs are welcome but they will be pacers only.

September 22, 2004 – Week 2

Splitsville
Chris Vance got the 2-4-7-10 in his second game!

ABC/WIBC Honor Scores and Achievements
Norvin Cronk earned a 125-pins over average series award from ABC for his high scores tonight. Congratulations!

Welcome new bowler Rex (and hopefully Belinda too!)
Rex Leyman (non Unisys) joins Team #9.  Belinda Shankle (Bldg 2) was a spectator this week, but after bowling she decided to join us as well. She will join up with Team 9 starting on Week 3.  So Team #9 is complete, and now we just need to work on Team #10....!

September 15, 2004 – Week 1

Lucky Strike Game
We didn't play Lucky Strike last night since our game host John is no longer in the league.  Should we continue this game?  Is anyone interested in running this game this year? Speak up!
--> After a very very brief wait, we have a new game host!  Denise Goldie will be the new host for Lucky Strike. If she happens to not be present one night, Sue Hodor will sub.  Thank you, ladies!

Splitsville
Dan Finkelstein picked up the 5-7.  (Only once!)

ABC/WIBC Honor Scores and Achievements
Tony Kryka's Game 1 was an all-spare game.  Tony will receive a special "all-spare game" patch from ABC.  Tip: Only 10 consecutive spares (in a single game) are needed to qualify for this award. Let your secretary know if you've rolled an all-spare game so that an official frame-by-frame printout can be obtained from the counter

Did you know... the center pages of the ABC/WIBC rule book shows all the achievement awards that are offered.

WIBC Pin Points for Awards
Ladies!  If you have been collecting pin points in place of award merchandise, you should know that the point program was  discontinued effective August 1, 2004. All points expire July 31, 2005, so plan on how you want to redeem any remaining points. See the WIBC section of www.bowl.com for details.

September 14, 2004 – One More Day!

It's here - the start of the 2004-05 bowling season!  When you arrive at Plaza Lanes on Wednesday, please be prepared with the following fees:

  • Sanction fee ($16 men, $15 women).  Sanction application cards will be distributed to your tables.

  • First week of bowling ($10)

  • Last week of bowling ($10)

Both cash and checks are accepted. If you choose to pay by check, please write it payable to "Unisys Mixed Bowling League". Yes, you can combine these payments into one lump sum for a total of either $36 (men) or $35 (women).

League Bylaws Revisited

Resulting from last week's meeting, there are some changes to our league bylaws to be aware of:

  • Rule 6 explains Week 25. It is doubles only, and will NOT count for standings this year (although it had in the past). Rule 6 also explains how final standings for the season are calculated.

  • Rules 14 and 16 refer to default averages for men and women who do not have an average with our league. The numbers were recalculated to reflect the actual averages from the previous season.

Results of Officer Election

There was no election for two reasons:  a) No additional candidates were identified prior to the meeting, leaving just one candidate for each office, and b) not enough teams were represented at the meeting to have an official vote.

Therefore, the one nominee for each office "wins" by default. Your officers for this season are:

President Kathie O'Brien
Vice President Denise Dunn
Secretary Kathy Wyrwas
Treasurer Tony Kryka

Welcome to Bob Olson and Ray Card
Please extend a warm welcome to new bowlers Bob and Ray.  Bob will open up Team #9, and Ray joins Denise and Kathy on Here for the Beer.  Still need bowlers to complete team #9! Talk to your friends and neighbors, and Plaza Lanes is welcome to send any interested party our way.

September 8, 2004 – Pre Season Meeting

Agenda

  • Review league bylaws for any changes. See August 10 news entry below.

  • Vote on new officers.

  • Fill out sanction applications and turn in fees.

 September Birthdays
Dan McMillen (Sept 1), Rob Ritchie (Sept 24), Denise Dunn (Sept 25).  And on Oct 1, it's Denise Goldie.

New Rules To Consider Adopting:  Amendments J-1, J-3, and J-5

The WIBC Legislative Committee met jointly with the ABC Rules Committee on October 4, 2003 to review, discuss and recommend changes to the ABC/WIBC Playing Rules. The joint committee also reviewed suggested codifications to the rules book. Changes took effect August 1, 2004. Some of the amendments may affect how our league operates (i.e. our league rules) and are listed below.  Please read them, and bring your ideas and opinions to the pre-season meeting on Sept 8. We have the option to adopt these new rules if we so choose.

Brief descriptions of certain amendments are quoted from the Fall 2004 issue of American Bowler magazine:

  • Amendment J-1, Managed Leagues
This rule allows an individual designated as the "league manager" to oversee operations of the league, including such duties as creating and enforcing league rules, establishing and distributing the prize fund, and resolving disputes.  While the rule gives the league manager significant power, it also includes traditional safeguards to ensure the league operates under ABC/WIBC rules.

  • Amendment J-3, Revision to Rule 100e, Handicap Leagues
This amendment resolves situations where bowlers are unable to establish averages according to league rules. Under Rule 100e, a bowler who does not bowl the number of games required by league rule to establish an average is handicapped off a figure of 120, which is only fair for a 120-average bowler.  The new rule allows the league to determine handicap for the bowler based on complete games bowled, even if less than those required by league rule.

  • Amendment J-5, Revision to Rule 114a, Withdrawals/Resignations
This amendment allows bowlers who have properly withdrawn from the league to return to bowl on the same team without a vote of the league's team captains. This rule makes it easier if a person who has changed jobs or may be serving in military duty to quit the league for justifiable cause and return without difficulty if circumstances change.

Full text of all proposed amendments is located at: http://www.bowlingmembership.com/pdf/WIBC_04DelegatesHandbook.pdf

Decisions to accept or reject them are posted at:
http://www.bowl.com/templates/BowlDotCom/common/news/record.html?record=8091

USBC is Coming January 1, 2005. What Will Change?

On January 1, 2005, ABC, WIBC, YABA, and USA Bowling will merge to create the long-awaited United States Bowling Congress -- the USBC.  The changes we see at our level will be minimal. For example:

  • The average you have earned by December 31, 2004, plus any awards and achievements, will carry over to the USBC.
  • The ABC and WIBC award and recognition programs will continue.
  • The sanction card you will receive at the start of the season will still say "ABC" or "WIBC". New USBC sanction cards will be issued starting with the 2005-06 season.

For more details on changes to the board of directors, annual meetings, etc., check out the latest USBC news at www.bowl.com

Sweepstakes and Promotions
Did you know that you can win a free game of bowling from Baby Ruth, Banquet, or Days Inn?  Or that you can get an ABC/WIBC credit card from Bank One? OR that you can get a 4-5% discount on a new Gateway PC?  Check out the "Sweepstakes and Promotions" section (in the right-side column) of www.bowl.com
