December 7, 2005 – Week 12

Winner of First Half:  "Triple S"

Holiday Potluck Night: Dec 14
Once again, Plaza Lanes is letting us break their "no outside food" rule so that we can have our annual holiday food fest. Please remember to bring a dish to share next week.

December 21 Status
There was a bit of confusion last night over whether or not we bowl on December 21. Upon checking our contract with Plaza Lanes, this date is NOT listed as an off week (unlike many previous years). But this is not the case this year.  Yes we are bowling December 21.  Other pages on this site will be updated accordingly.

USBC Achievement Awards
June Cannon's score of 181 in Game 1 is eligible for the USBC 180-199 high game award (for averages of 140 and less). However, official prizes can only be awarded by USBC once per season for this award. Congrats anyway, June!

Unofficial League Homecoming Day
Linda Marler, Denise Durkin, and Chris and Lori Vance all dropped in to visit.  It was nice to see all of you again!

$5 Winners
Plaza Lanes provided a different amount of money than expected, so instead of $10 per pair of lanes, we switched the payout to $5 per team. The winners are:
June Cannon (+52), Dennis Todic (+7), Nancy Waskiewicz (+32), Kevin Murphy (+38), Kurt Bowers (+70), Ray Card (+59), John Oliverio (+57).

Wow, you folks bowled your pins off!  Don't spend your windfall all in once place now, y'hear?

Splitsville
Kevin Murphy made the 6-7.
Denise Dunn got the 5-7!
Guyla made the 5-10!
Theresa Belser also made the 5-10!

November 30, 2005 – Week 11

Week 12: End of 1st Half, Position Round, and "Bowling for Dollars"
Just a reminder that Week 12 (Dec 7) is the end of the season's first half. Subs are welcome but are pacers only. The team at the top of the standings after bowling is our winner of the first half.  Also, the person on each pair of lanes who bowls highest over their average (series) wins $10 from Plaza Lanes. Claim your prize from the secretary (Kathy) when you turn in your score sheet.

USBC Achievement Awards
All awards earned in the first 11 weeks have been turned in to the GDBA/DWBA offices for processing. View the list of award recipients here.

Tournament Time
Feeling competitive? The tournaments listing page has been updated for this season. Many events are now taking applications.

Splitsville
Ray Card made the 2-10.
Dennis Todic got the pesky 5-10.

November 16, 2005 – Week 10

No Bowling Next Week (Nov 23)
Just a reminder that we don't bowl next week. Start cooking turkey or start your holiday shopping!

Week 12 Info

  • You may have already noticed on the standings sheet that Week 12 is a Position Round. It is also the end of the first half the season (already). That means that whichever team is in 1st place at the end of the night is the winner of the first half.  Subs are welcome but will be pacers only. Pacers must be certified with USBC.
  • Also to spice up the first-half end, we will be bowling for our "Holiday Ten Dollars From Plaza Lanes". (No more turkeys. There had been health/safety concerns from having them sit inside all day -- unrefrigerated, but frozen when delivered.) The $10 will go to the one bowler on each pair of lanes who bowls the highest over their average for the series.

USBC Achievement Awards
Sue Hodor's score of 209 in Game 2 qualifies for a USB 200-249 Game award. However, this award is honored only once per season, and Sue already got it on Week 5.

High Rollers
Because USBC recognizes so many more award options than ABC/WIBC, I am discontinuing this section of the newsletter.

Splitsville
Jill Conway made the 6-7.
Sue Hodor made the 5-6.
Ray Card got the 3-6-7-10.
Dan Finkelstein made the "big" 5-7.

November 9, 2005 – Week 9

New Secretary Software Gives New Look to Reports

Note from Your Secretary on Using Substitutes and Pacers
If you bring in a sub or pacer who has not yet bowled this season, please be sure to see your secretary before games get underway. The sub/pacer needs to fill out a certification application and may need to pay the certification fee, and the secretary will confirm what average they should use.

High Rollers
Ray Card was our only 200-achiever this week with 223 in Game 2 and 210 in Game 3.

Splitsville
Dianne Zagor made the 3-10.

USBC Women's Championship Tournament Coming to Canton MI in 2008!
Super Bowl Lanes in Canton has been selected as the women's tournament site for 2008. Read the full story on the USBC web site at http://www.bowl.com/articleView.aspx?i=10982&f=1. (The 2005 event has passed, and the 2006 event takes place May through July in Reno NV.)

Just a reminder that next week is a position round.  Just a reminder that subs are welcome to bowl, but they are pacers only.

USBC Achievement Awards
Sue Hodor gets our first official USBC award of the season with her 203 score in Game 2. The award is for a 200 game with an average of 160 or less.
NOTE:  USBC awards are not quite the same as ABC/WIBC awards, because the previously separate men's and women's awards have been consolidated. Please refer to the awards page in www.bowl.com for a complete awards listing.

October 5, 2005 – Week 4

GDBA Annual Meeting:  October 15 at 1pm

If you have never attended one of these, THIS is an important one to be at, because on the agenda is discussing and voting on the merger of GDBA, DWBA, the Pontiac Women's BA, and the Greater Detroit YA into ONE local organization. (The women's DWBA annual meeting --and their vote on this issue-- is held separately.)
*Rules and award categories were already consolidated under USBC. Nothing is published on what else is at stake. Guess they want us to come to the meeting to find out.

Other topics on the agenda include reviewing the auditor's financial report and electing delegates to the USBC annual convention (April 19-25 in Corpus Christi, TX).

All GDBA members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Those who are eligible to vote are league officers and Board of Directors members (i.e. team captains).

  • DATE: Saturday October 15
  • TIME: 1pm
  • LOCATION: Sunnybrook Lanes. 7191 17 Mile Rd, Sterling Hts. (586)264-2700

** Bring your 2005-2006 USBC certification card if it arrives by then, or the Temporary Membership Receipt stub if it has not. Proof of current USBC/GDBA membership is required to vote.

About Absent Bowler Scores
Just one small request from your secretary...  When a teammate is absent, could you write A or ABS next to their name on the score sheet? Three of a kind scores (when bowled) qualify as a USBC achievement award, so it is important to communicate when the "three of a kind' is actually from an absence instead. Thanks!!

Position Round Coming!
Our first position round of the half is coming In two weeks, on Oct 19. (We have fewer position rounds this year because we have fewer teams.)  Just a reminder that subs are welcome to bowl, but they are pacers only. Subs and pacers must fill out a USBC certification form (and pay the $16 or $15), which your secretary has.

Splitsville
None reported this week.

High Rollers
Our own 200+ congrats go out to:

  • Kevin Murphy: 236 in Game 3.
  • John Oliverio: 215 in Game 2.

One more name change! The team previously known as One Left (Theresa, John, and Dan) is now "Pin Action".

September 21, 2005 – Week 2

RECALCULATING SOME WEEK 1 SCORES
It was brought to your secretary's attention that the entering score for Santo Lupo should not have been the default men's average (157) because he had a book average of 187 at the end of the 2004-2005 season. Yep, that is correct. I goofed.  I thought I had looked everybody up, but apparently not. Changing Santo's average from 157 to 187 alters the results from both Weeks 1 and 2. The recalculated standings sheets from Week 1 are posted here

Team Name Change
Our new team (entered as Team 3D) has changed their name to ZZTOD.

Splitsville
Tony Kryka made the 2-7.
Guyla Kryka got the 5-6-10.
Dennis Todic made the 5-7.
Ray Card made the 1-2-4-10 washout.

High Rollers
A-l-m-o-s-t making a 200 game was Dennis Zagor's Game 1 score of 198.

Birthday Wishes
Our September birthday girl is Denise Dunn (Sept 25). Check out the birthday calendar for who's next.

September 14, 2005 – Week 1

Position Round Information
Due to the decreased number of teams this season, our position rounds do not need to be as frequent. Last year they were every four weeks; this season they are every 6 weeks. The Lane Assignments page indicates when a week is a position round.

Team Name Change
FYI, the team formerly known as "Rock-n-Roll Country-n-Soul" (Sue, June, and Santo) has changed their name to "Triple S".
** If you want to change your team name, or the order of names on the score sheet, simply mark up your changes on the score sheet (front or back) and it will be fixed for the next week.

Lucky Strike and Mystery
Our game hostesses for this season are Denise Goldie (Lucky Strike) and Sue Hodor (Mystery). Find them each week to enter the (optional) games.

Splitsville
Denise Goldie got the 5-8-10.
Guyla Kryka made the 5-6-10.
** To get your split listed here, simply write it on the back of your score sheet.

High Rollers
Congrats to Ray Card on his 199 in Game 2.
** Stats for official recognition are tracked after a bowler has completed 6 games.

September 7, 2005 – Pre-Season Meeting Minutes

Certification (Sanctioning)

Handed out USBC certification applications. No bowler signatures required on them this year, just the secretary's signature is needed on the small tear-off stub. Online certification still not working. Must certify by the first week that you bowl (because the league certification application must be turned in after Week 1).

Teams and Team Rosters

Verified which teams are coming back (or not).

  • No one present knew for sure the status of those teams not represented at the meeting. Learned after the meeting from followup calls that Team Fock-n-Pins is not returning, and that Norvin Cronk and Denise Durkin are not returning, leaving Kathie O'Brien without a team. Kathie later decided as well not to return.

  • Linda Marler is not coming back, as she will be starting a new job in Detroit and is not sure about arriving on time.

  • Santo Lupo returns to the league, taking Vince Hoh's spot on Team Rock-n-Roll Country-n-Soul.

But we did GAIN one team: Dennis Todic, Dianne Zagor, and Dennis Zagor are starting out as "Team 3-D".

Officer Nominations/Voting

Welcome to June Cannon as our new league president.

Other offices had no additional nominations, so the same officers will serve this year:  VP-Denise Dunn, Secr-Kathy Wyrwas, and Treas-Tony Kryka.

Changes to League Rules

None proposed. But do note that a new USBC rule requires pacers to be certified, and that pacers are now eligible for USBC achievement awards. Pacer scores still do not affect team scores.

"Tournament of Champions"

Ed Henderson proposed this additional fun night of bowling. It would pit this season's League Champion against last season's League Champion on Week 26. Ed's original plan was that only those two teams would bowl (and Plaza Lanes had already agreed to let them bowl for free), but it was suggested at the meeting that anyone else would be welcome to bowl as well and we would run another doubles tournament. Ed will check with Plaza to see if the additional teams would also bowl for free, or what the nominal lane fee might be. I'm sure we will hear more about this as we get closer to the end of the season.

August 15, 2005

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO PRIOR TO THE PRE-SEASON MEETING

Team captains:

  • Confirm your team roster. Per Rule 104b, teams automatically disband at the end of a season, and it is up to YOU to set up your team roster for the coming season.
  • Review rule 104a on captain's responsibilities and review rules 103a-b on the Board of Directors' responsibilities (because team captains are automatically members of the league's Board of Directors).
