POLL:  DO YOU WANT MORE WEEKS IN THE SEASON NEXT YEAR?
Only two people replied last week. Please let your voice be heard!!  Repeating the poll this week...

Has the season gone too fast for you?  Do you want a few more weeks to work on your average, or your bowling skills?  Plaza Lanes has already asked us to sign the contract for next year. If we want more weeks, we need to know ASAP.  Input from ALL bowlers (not just the team captains) is requested.  Please reply Yes or No to your league secretary

Doubles Results Posted
Game, series, and over-average amounts are posted here!  Congrats to Kevin and Guyla for a combined 80 pins over average.

Brackets and Lane Assignment for Week 26 Tournament
Final standings after Week 24 were used to determine the team matchups for next week. Instead of 1st place vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th, Eddie the tournament organizer decided it would be a more even distribution of ability to have 1st place vs last place, 2nd place vs 2nd-to-last, etc.  The resulting team pairings and and lane assignments are posted here for your reference (PDF file). Score sheets for each team will be available next week.

USBC Achievement Awards
Congrats to Kevin Murphy for finally snagging an award!  (Not that we've never seen your name on the sheet! ha.) His Game 1 score of 279 nets him the 75 pins over average award.

Doin' The Splits
Santo Lupo got the 4-9.
Dianne Zagor got the 2-10.
Theresa Belser made the 3-7.
Dan Finkelstein made the 5-10.

Team ZZTOD!

Congratulations to Dennis, Dianne, and Dennis!!   On Week 25, Team Triple S and Team ZZTOD will square off to see which team is the season champ.

Final Point Standings
First place overall in points goes to:   Team "Triple S"!

Final standings are determined by adding up your 1st half points with your 2nd half points. To see how your team finished overall for points, refer to the final point standings overall page.

Tip: The resulting order is also used for determining lane assignments for the Week 25 doubles tournament.

Doin' The Splits

Guyla Kryka got the 2-7.

About Weeks 25 and 26
Just a reminder that although the second half the season is over, we've got two "fun" weeks of bowling remaining. They are optional.  If you cannot make it, your absentee score will be used. Bowling results on Weeks 25 and 26 do not count and will not be reflected in your averages.

Team pairings and results for Doubles Tournament on Week 25 will be posted on this page (also available from this site's home page).

Banquet Date Confirmed
The banquet has been confirmed for Friday March 31. Check the banquet page for more information.

Doin' The Splits
Nancy made the 6-7 (or was that the 9 pin? we weren't sure).
Tony made a 5-10 and a 2-7.

This Week in Bowling History
Just some trivia I found on www.bowl.com...  Check out the details yourself if you are interested.

  • On March 7, 1902, the first perfect game in league play was recorded.

  • On March 12, 1918, the first annual meeting of what would become the WIBC was held in Cincinnati.

February 22, 2006 – Week 22

Season is Winding Down
Only two more weeks of bowling are left in the second half, followed by a roll-off for first place and optional doubles tournament on Week 25 and a new fun event on Week 26, also optional, a 1-round elimination Tournament of Champions.

A Former League Member Visits
Paul Zimmerman dropped by to visit and reminisce about seasons past. And he's got some great bowling technique tips too!

Doin' The Splits
Jill Conway made the 5-6-10 split.

February 15, 2006 – Week 21

February 8, 2006 – Week 20

Update: Tournament of Champions on Week 26
Ed Henderson will ensure that each team caption is apprised of the rules for this fun night of bowling. In summary, here is how the tournament will work:

  • There is NO additional cost to us to bowl this night.

  • Bowling this night will be optional. If you are absent, your absentee score will be used.

  • Scores do not count for individual statistics or for team standings.

  • It is a single-elimination challenge. Plan to play three games. The first game will match up all teams including the Blind team. The four winning teams move on to Game 2. Those two winners will move to Game 3. The winner of Game 3 gets the prize money.

USBC Achievement Awards
Three bowlers had scores in the award range, but all three have already received those awards from USBC this season. The repeat achievements go to:

  • Two to Sue Hodor.  Her Game 1 (211) and Game 2 (203) scores count for 200-249 Game awards.

  • One to Dianne Zagor.  Her Game 2 score of 204 is another 200-249 Game award.

Doin' the Splits!
Kevin Murphy was one pin away from earning "The Big 4" - he made the 4-7-6-10 plus the 9 pin.
Denise Dunn made the 3-10.

February 1, 2006 – Week 19

GDBA and DWBA Merger Accepted
The final voting was completed at the DWBA annual meeting last month. An overwhelming majority of members in attendance from both Associations voted to approve the merger. The new organization is known as the Metro Detroit USBC (MDUSBC) and began operating under the new name on January 15. Read the press release here on the DWBA web site

Roster Change: Here For The Beer
Without clearance yet to resume normal activity on her previously broken ankle, Kathy Wyrwas decided to step down from her team, and Steve Brookins is now an official team member. Kathy remains the league secretary, and will still be attending. (I would miss you all, otherwise!!)

Pink Ladies to Participate Again in Women's City Tournament

Once again, our own Pink Ladies will compete in the Detroit Women's City Tournament. Jill Conway joins in the fun this year to fill in for Kathy's spot on the roster, who will not have the minimum number of games required to play. Squad dates are weekends in April. This year's event takes place at Taylor Lanes, on Eureka Road just west of Telegraph. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer the Ladies on!  Last year we placed in the top 15 in our division... looking to better that this time!

USBC Achievement Awards
Greg Skotzke has earned his first USBC award, a 200 Game award (key chain) for his Game 1 score of 200.  Dianne Zagor also rolled a 200 game, but has already received this award this season.

Doin' The Splits
Guyla Kryka made the 1-3-8-10 washout.
Denise Dunn got the 1-7-8 washout.

 February Birthday
Guess who's birthday is next week... maybe someone ELSE should bring the cookies instead this time!  ;)

January 25, 2006 – Week 18

It's (Almost) Banquet Time!
Our vice-president Denise Dunn is going to be arranging the banquet plans and reservations. The date is usually the Friday of the week after the last week of bowling. This year, that makes it March 24 (or March 31, if you account for Week 26.... see next subject!)  We will most likely be returning to Steak-n-Ale. If you can help with anything, please contact Denise.  (Also, note the new link to the banquet info page on this site's home page.)

A new idea for entertainment at this year's banquet, suggested by Ed Henderson, is to display a slide show of candid photos of YOU bowling!  Kathy will be taking photos at the next couple of weeks of bowling (maybe some when you are not even paying attention!), and we will use those images in the slide show. (If you don't want to be in any photos, just let me know.)

"Tournament of Champions" on Week 26 (March 22)
Yes, I did say week 26!! Eddie is putting together a new fun night to be held after our usual 25 weeks have completed. He has arranged a special discount with Plaza Lanes for this night. Basically it will be a 1-game elimination tournament, with the last team standing winning $60 ($20 per bowler). I am asking Ed to "reply all" to this week's mailing so he can give everyone complete details how this tournament will be played.

Doin' The Splits
Dennis Todic made the 5-7.
Ray Card made the 1-2-4-10 washout.

January 18, 2006 – Week 17

  • Entries to the 2006 USBC Championships (also known as the 103rd ABC Championships) closed on January 15. If you still want to go (Corpus Christi, TX), the only way to enter now is to buy out someone else's closed registration. See www.abctournament.com for details.

  • For women, entries to the WIBC Championship are still open until January 27, but dates are limited to only weekdays in May. June and July are completely sold out. If you want to go (Reno, NV) see www.wibctournament.com for details.

Would You Like to Become a House Representative? (Bulletin from Plaza Lanes)

(Reposting from a handout bulletin I found at Plaza Lanes, in the tournament entry form display.)

Do you think you know the rules of the game?
Would you like to know them better?
How about meeting some new friends?

GDBA needs some good qualified people who love the game of bowling to become House Representatives for the Greater Detroit Bowling Association (name changing to Metro Detroit USBC). Responsibilities include:

  • You would be making awards presentations.
  • Promote bowling and the certification of our members.
  • Promote the bowling center's activities.
  • And of course, when called upon, resolve rules questions.
  • We will provide the training that you will need.

If you are interested in working for the betterment of the game we could use your help. Send the following information to the GDBA office or email to mmartin@gdba.com. We could use a few good people like you to make our game better for all.

January 11, 2006 – Week 16

Local Association Merger Meeting: Sunday January 15
Last year ABC and WIBC merged at the national level to form the USBC. This year, the merger affects the local associations. Do you want GDBA (men's) and DWBA (women's) to merge? Well, this meeting is where you vote on that issue. All members of both GDBA and DWBA are welcome to attend.

  • Sunday January 15, 4pm
Shriner's Auditorium, 24350 Southfield Rd, Southfield MI, 48075

This meeting will approve the bylaws of the new local organization (to be called "Metro Detroit USBC") and approve the proposed budget. The Metro Detroit USBC will begin operations on May 1, 2006. The meeting will also include an election for President and Vice-President, youth committee members, board members, and state delegates.

USBC Achievement Awards
Kurt Bowers has earned the 200-249 Game award (a key chain) for his Game 2 score of 206.
Dianne Zagor has earned THREE awards! She has won the 75 Pins Over Average patch, the 200-249 Game key chain, and the 500 Series pin (her series was 524), all thanks to her outstanding Game 3 score of 233.

Did You Know...?
All-spare games qualify for a USBC Achievement Award (a patch). An all-spare game is defined as containing 10 consecutive spares in a single game, and the game score cannot exceed 191. If you qualify, please inform the secretary. You or the secretary will then obtain a printout of the game scoring from the counter as documentation of your achievement, to send in to USBC for your award.

Doin' the Splits
Sue Hodor made the 3-10.

PS: More birthdays!  Go find out who!

January 4, 2006 – Week 15

Week 14 Score Correction / Resolution to the "bowling out" situation on Week 14

It was decided at our pre-game meeting to let Santo's actual Game 3 score stand last week. There was no rule violation, even though no one knew of an actual rule to refer to. The situation was called "bowling out" and is addressed by USBC Rule #106e, which says "A bowler may finish any one game of a series before teammates or opponents". The rule does not say how this should be carried out in practice (i.e. if everyone sits and waits, or the bowling-out bowler alternates with everyone else). The "note" under the rule is considered only a suggestion (confirmed by USBC Rules staff) and helps to keep the game moving. It is not a rule violation if bowling out is not done in that manner.

The standing sheet for Week 14 has been recalculated and posted on the standings sheet page. It is marked "recalculated". If you do not see two sets of score sheets for Week 14, please click the Refresh button on your browser.

Note: Additional rule books are being ordered. Anyone can have a copy, especially if you don't or can't check the rules online. At minimum, every team captain and every league officer should have a copy (and read it!), and bring it to bowling each week. Please never hesitate to look something up, as it is most likely covered. If you would like your own copy of this season's USBC rule book, please give me a call (ext 4625) or email me.

USBC Achievement Awards
Tony Kryka has earned a 200-249 Game Award for his Game 2 score of 202.
Nancy Waskiewicz has earned a 180-199 Game award for her Game 3 score of 184.
Ray Card's 613 series is eligible for a 600-699 Series award, but he has already received that this season.

Splitsville
Dennis Todic made a 3-10.

PS: There is a birthday to celebrate on Week 16!

January 1, 2006 – Happy New Year!

December 21, 2005 – Week 14

USBC Acheivement Awards

  • Santo Lupo earned the 75 pins over average award for his 266 score in Game 1. The award prize is a patch from USBC.

  • Other award-worthy scores were Steve Brookins' 630 series and Dennis Todic's Game 1 score of 210; however, they have earned these achievements earlier in the season, and official prizes can only be awarded by USBC once per season for these awards.

Splitsville
Denise Goldie made the 5-7!
Greg Skotzke got the 3-7-10.
