Final Standings For the Season
There was a bit of confusion about this but, YES, last night's games counted for points (as it has in previous years) and therefore set the final overall standings for the year. Check out the new final standings page to see the point totals for both season halves and the overall season.

Doubles Results
Jill Conway and Vince Hoh got the highest overage scores.  See the doubles tournament page for detailed results for all doubles pairs.

Banquet is Friday April 2 at 6:00 pm at Montana's
The room will be open at 6pm, and dinner will be served at 6:30.  Also in the course of the evening, we will be soliciting nominations for next year's league officers and asking if there should be any changes made to the league bylaws. Note that these are just nominations, and that voting on these issues will take place at the next pre-season meeting in September.

Thanks to our "fun and games" hosts!
Thank you Sue Bushway for handling Mystery jackpot duties, and thank you John Oliverio for overseeing the Lucky Strike games.

April Birthdays
Birthday wishes go out to Norvin Cronk (Apr 7), Kathie O'Brien (Apr 11), Guyla Kryka (Apr 26), and June Cannon (Apr 30).

Summer Birthdays
Many more of our leaguemates are celebrating their birthdays outside of bowling season. I could list them all here, but I think I'll wait till the appropriate month....!

A Final Word on Teams, Captains, and Next Season

  • Team captains, you hold your team franchise (team spot) with the league (see ABC/WIBC rule 104b). The league secretary will be contacting you before the start of next season to find out if you intend to bring your team back or not, and what your roster will be. Look for this sometime in August.

  • Next season starts either September 8 or 15.

  • A pre-season meeting will be held the week prior to Week 1.  At the meeting we will confirm league bylaws, vote on any changes to the bylaws, vote on officers for the new season (who are to be nominated at this year's banquet), and hand out sanction applications for 2004-05. So mark your calendars, watch your email (or voice mail) in August, and we'll see you then!

Thank you for bowling, and see you next season!

And the Second Half Winner Is...:
Sorry but we don't know yet!!!!!

As you can see on Page 1 of the standings sheet, teams Here for the Beer and KDN.com are tied in points for first place. Rule 26 of our league bylaws (supported by ABC/WIBC rule 113a) states that we need a one-game roll-off to determine the actual winner of the second half. This game has been arranged to take place Sunday March 21 at 2:30 pm.  Everyone is welcome to come out and watch this game.

Reminder: Everyone Bowls On Week 25 for our Doubles Tournament

Denise Dunn got the 4-5-7!!

ABC/WIBC Honor Scores
John Oliverio's Game 1 score of 267 earns a recognition of "75 pins over average". ABC has already conferred this award to him once this season, so all we can do this time is say "Congratulations!".

Banquet Reminder
Have you turned in your entree preference to Eddie?  If not, give him a call ASAP.

We were very honored to witness one lady (with an average in the mid-160's) bowl a 299!  Whispers started spreading in her 8th or 9th frame, and the crowd of onlookers grew and grew. Out of respect when Nena was up, no one else bowled. Then came the 11th strike. On her 12th and final ball, Nena knocked down 9 pins. Applause, hugs, and tears for a lot of women watching. What an accomplishment!

Reminders About the Final Two Position Round Weeks

  • Week 24 is once again a position round. Subs are welcome to participate (which helps their own stats) but remember they are pacers only for position round games.

  • The team who ends up in first place after Week 24 is the winner of the second half of the season.

  • On Week 25, the first and second half winners go head to head to determine the overall season champ, and all bowlers will be taking place in a doubles tournament. Doubles pairs are determined by final averages: the highest and lowest average will be paired up, the second highest and second lowest will be paired up, etc. You bowl with your regular team of course; these pairings are "on paper" only. If you are absent on Week 25, your absentee score will be used (i.e. your average minus 10 pins).

  • Sorry subs, but the doubles tournament pairs up only permanent bowlers. It is also considered the final position round. You are welcome to bowl as a pacer only.

Please see the banquet page for time, place, maps, etc.

March Birthdays
The only birthday honoree this month is Adrienne Ray (March 26).

Bowl With The Pros on March 13 and 14, 2004!

Ever wonder what it would be like to bowl with professional bowlers? Well, here is your chance!!

The PBA World Championship Pro-Am Tournament is coming to Taylor Lanes (Eureka Rd just west of Telegraph) this month.  You can enjoy a brunch with the pros, and also sign up to bowl 3 tournament games with 3 different professionals as your partner!  Youths can also register if they are participating in a YABA sanctioned league. Youths compete in one of several divisions based on their average.

  • Brunch is served buffet-style during practice sessions 8am-10:30am both days.  Just $15 covers both brunch and the cost of bowling in the practice sessions.

  • To bowl, four squad times are available each day. Entry fee is $79 for adults or $45 for youths. Or buy a new ball and pay $155 or $175 (based on model) for both the ball and entry fee combined. ($175 is for either a Brunswick Inferno or Raging Inferno, and $155 is for either a Brunswick Monster Bruiser or Monster SlayR. Save $10 if you are age 62 or over!)

  • The brochure/entry form for this event is available at Plaza Lanes.

  • Additional information is available at http://www.taylorlanesbowling.com/ and http://www.pba.com/ (includes TV schedule).

Additional Tournament Opportunities
See our tournament page for additional details about these events.

  • Going to the Kentucky Derby this year? Well, the 55th Annual Kentucky Derby Tournament is in town too for April, May, and June. Both men and women bowlers are welcome.

  • Another popular event is the 59th Annual Shammy Burt Tournament, which is held in Toledo, OH. Squad dates started in November and continue through June. Traditionally all men, recent years have seen an increase in all-women squads. Entries are still open.

  • A bit closer to home is the 54th Annual Hamtramck Classic, another mixed tournament. Squad times are Saturdays and Sundays now through July 25.

February 25, 2004 -- Week 21 Results

Splitsville
Tony Kryka made the 5-6-7!!

ABC/WIBC Honor Scores
Kevin's Game 2 score of 274 put him oh-so-close to an award. Men need 100 pins over average in a game (or 150 pins in a series) to earn this recognition, and Kevin's score was 86 pins over. While ABC doesn't care, we do!  And winning mystery for this game made it even sweeter. Nice game, Kevin!!  J

Reminder:  Doubles Tournament Coming Up
On Week 24, the winner of the second half will be determined. On Week 25, the first and second half winners go head to head to determine the overall season champ, and all bowlers will be taking place in a doubles tournament.

Announcement:  Banquet Date and Location Are Decided

  • This year's banquet will take place on Friday April 2 at Montana's (same place as last year.) The banquet room will open at 6pm, with dinner being served at 6:30. If you need a map, please see the banquet page

  • In addition to distributing awards ($), also taking place at the banquet will be nominations for next year's league officers and confirming our league bylaws and suggesting any changes to them. Voting on these things will take place at a pre-season meeting in September, so you'll have all summer to think about them.

  • Dinner menu: There will be 3-4 entrees from which to choose. You must make your choice ahead of time to help the kitchen serve us efficiently. Ed Henderson will be distributing an entree sign-up sheet at bowling in the next couple of weeks.

  • Is anyone participating in Bowl for the Cure®? Please contact your secretary for pledge sheets and information on turning in your pledged donation.

Did You Know....?
The "most improved average" listed on each week's score sheet is not a week-by-week recognition. Instead, it looks at the change in bowlers' averages between Week 1 and the current week, and reports the one with the largest increase.

February 4, 2004 -- Week 18 Results

Splitsville
Jeff Shoemaker made the 4-7!  (Game 1, Frame 10)
Vince Hoh made the 4-7-9-10!!!

February Birthdays
Birthday honorees this month include:  Ed Henderson (Feb 7) and Ron Nastal (Feb 21).

Mark Your Calendars: The Banquet Date Will Be...
Friday, April 2, 2004.  Unless we absolutely can't get a reservation on that date. The location is still TBD. The scouting team is hard at work sampling and talking to banquet managers. (What a rough assignment!)
Montana's (where we were last year) is on the list. Also to be scouted (i.e. taste tested) are Archie's (Plymouth Rd between Merriman and Middlebelt) and Mama Mia's (Plymouth Rd just west of Inkster Rd). If you have another place in mind, please contact Eddie.  See the banquet page for more information.

January 28, 2004 -- Week 17 Results

Splitsville
Denise Durkin got the 5-10!
Tony Kryka got the 3-7!
Scott Collier got the 4-6-10!

Reminder: Bowl for the Cure® Night coming up on Week 20 (February 18)
Please consider joining with WIBC, the Komen Foundation, and thousands of bowlers in the fight to strike out breast cancer. If you are participating, start thinking about what your per-pin pledge will be and start asking friends and family to sponsor you for additional per-pin amounts. See details below

Pledging "a penny per pin" (an amount suggested by WIBC) is hardly expensive. For example, if your scores were 160-158-149, your series would be 467, which means your total pledge amount would be $4.67. That's less than five dollars!

Need a Substitute Bowler?
Don't forget to check out the sub list here.  Includes contact numbers.

First Big Snow of the Year
Thanks to everyone who braved the snowy road conditions last night to come out and bowl. If this happens again this season and you feel you don't want to be on the roads or rush to get to Plaza, that's fine - your safety concerns come first!  Just remember to call one of your teammates or the league secretary to let them know you won't be present. Your absentee score will be used.

Splitsville
Ed Henderson got the 3-10!
Amber McMillen got the 2-7!

Position Round Next Week!
Week 16 is yet another position round. (First place plays second place, third place plays fourth place, etc.) Subs are welcome to participate (which helps their own stats) but remember they are pacers only for position round games.

Banquet Planning Time
It's time to start thinking about this year's end-of-season banquet. Ed Henderson (as our Vice Pres) is looking for ideas and suggestions. For example, should we return to Montana's? Go back to Buddy's? Try somewhere new?  If you'd like to help Eddie with pulling this event together, please email or call him. (His contact information is on the banquet page.)

GDBA Annual Meeting: January 11
A flyer was left on each team's table tonight announcing this year's GDBA (Greater Detroit Bowling Association) Annual Meeting on Sunday January 11 at 1:00 pm, to be held at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights.  All male bowlers in our league belong to the GDBA, and may attend this meeting. League officers and team captains are also welcome to attend. GDBA is encouraging each league to be represented at this meeting. If you are interested and would like a reminder of the agenda, please contact your secretary.

Bowl For the Cure® Night:  February 18 (Week 20)
February is Bowl for the Cure® month. Bowl for the Cure® is a breast cancer awareness and fundraising initiative in partnership with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. This is the most common type of cancer among women. This year, over 211,000 women will be diagnosed, and more than 39,000 women will die of this disease. Please consider joining with WIBC, the Komen Foundation, and thousands of bowlers in the fight to strike out breast cancer.

In honor of this initiative, February 18 will be our league's Bowl for the Cure® night. Here's how it will work:

  • Pledge a "penny per pin" (or other amount) for your scratch series score on Week 20. Invite friends and family to sponsor you and also pledge a "penny per pin" (or other amount). Pledge sheets are available at www.bowlforthecure.com. (Note that Week 20 is also a Position Round, so we all will be bowling our best anyway, right?!)

  • Participation is optional. Pacers are eligible to participate. Donations are tax-deductible, and receipts will be provided.

  • All proceeds raised will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as follows: Turn in your pledge money to the league, then our league turns over the proceeds to WIBC, and then WIBC will pass on the donation to the Komen Foundation in our league's name.

For receipts or questions on participating, contact your league secretary.  For general information about Bowl for the Cure®, visit  www.bowlforthecure.comwww.breastcancerinfo.com, and  www.komen.org. Thank you!
