Week 28 – April 7, 2010  **9-Pin No Tap Fun Night**

9-Pin No Tap Results
Prize money will be awarded to the highest scratch game scores for each men and women, which were:

  • Highest men's scratch score goes to Santo, for his Game 2 score of 278.

  • Highest women's scratch score goes to Stacey, for her Game 2 score of 264.

Complete scoring details are posted on the Fun Night event page.

Banquet: Friday April 16
See you this Friday at 7pm at Timber Wolf Lodge in Redford.  For a map and additional information, refer to the banquet page.

League Officer Election
League officers for next season will be nominated and elected at the banquet.  In past years, we only nominated officers at the banquet. But for the 09-10 season, at the pre-season meeting, we changed this to occur at the banquet, so that any newly elected officers will have the summer for training/transfer of knowledge and will be able to attend Plaza's league officer meeting in August.

  • Note that the Secretary position is open and needs a new candidate!

Suggestions for Rule Changes for 2010-2011
Request to change the league rules/bylaws can be made at any time, and will be discussed and voted upon at the pre-season meeting in September.  To submit a request and to view issues already submitted (1 new issue!), refer to the Rule Change Suggestions page.

New!  9-Pin No Tap Tournament at Plaza Lanes
Once a month, Plaza hosts a 9-pin no tap singles tournament. Next date is Thursday April 22. Check-in is at 12noon, practice starts at 12:20pm, and games start at 12:30pm. No need to register - just show up!!

  • Cost per bowler is just $7. Prize payouts are based on the number of entries.

  • Handicap is 80% from 225. Use last year's highest yearbook average.

  • If no book average, you may use a current league average with at least 21 games bowled. You must bring proof of average (recent league sheet is okay) with you on the day of the tournament.

  • If no book average and no league average, men will use 160 and women will use 130.

Week 27 – March 31, 2010  **Roll-Off and Doubles**

Roll-Off Results

The roll-off between Triple S and Comeback Kids ended with the need to get clarification from the USBC Rules Staff. Each team won one game and then tied in Game 3 - resulting in each team having 3 points. Thinking that this was a "tie" situation, the teams bowled one more frame in 10th-frame format as a tie-breaker. League officers said they would confirm with USBC Rules help that we handled this properly.

However, USBC Rules Staff informed us that a "tie" situation would only happen if the number of points earned for that night, under regular team rules, was a tie. Meaning, 2 points for a game and 1 point for series totals. ~~ The issue we had debated, about whether total points could or could not be used as a tie breaker, was improperly applied. The rule we pored over, USBC Rule #113, states that total points for the season, segment, or team average may not be used as a tie breaker. Not points earned in Games 1, 2, and 3, as we had done.

Counting the three games and the series totals, Triple S earned 3 points for the night's three games, and Comeback Kids earned 4 points. Therefore, this is not a tie, and Comeback Kids are the winners of the Roll-Off.  The additional "10th frame" bowled has no bearing, was not needed, and does not count. Game scoring results are posted on the Standings page.

Doubles Results
Congratulations to Steve and Lil for bowling a combined 153 pins over average!  Complete results are posted on the Doubles Event page.

Lane Assignments for 9-Pin No Tap Fun Night (April 7)
Lane assignments are posted on the Fun Night event page.

Banquet is Friday April 16
Just a reminder that our end-of-season banquet is Friday April 16 at 7pm at the Timber Wolf Lodge in Redford. See the banquet page if you need a map. Also don't forget that at the banquet we carry out a little bit of league business: we will be electing league officers for next season, and we will solicit rule change suggestions for next season.  (Rule changes will be voted upon at the next pre-season meeting in September.)

Next Year's League Secretary
As I am currently looking for a new job, I have no idea where I'll end up working or if the location or other circumstance would prevent me from bowling in fall. I would accept a nomination to continue, but cannot promise that I'd actually be able to do the job. Therefore, the time has come for someone else to take over Secretary duties for next season. Since we are voting on next year's officers in less than two weeks, it is very important that someone else step up and take over this role for our league. ~~ Official responsibilities of a league secretary are listed in the USBC Rule book at Rule #102e. ~~ Also, the league compensates you for your efforts with eight (8) weeks of bowling, applied to the last 8 weeks of the season. (This is defined by our league bylaws, item #27.)

Splits
Lil made the 4-7-10.
Dennis made the 5-10.
Jill made the 5-10.

USBC Achievement Awards
Steve earned two awards tonight! His Game 2 score of 275 garnered both a 275-game award and a 700-series award. Congrats!

  April Birthday Wishes

Final Team Season Standings Now Available
With the completion of Week 26, we can now determine the 1st thru 9th place standings for the season – and also lane assignments for Weeks 27 and 28. See the Final Standings Page for details.

Week 27 – Doubles and Roll-Off Next Week (March 31)

  • Week 27 is the roll-off between the winners of the first and second halves, to determine the overall season champ. Triple "S" will be going headpin-to-headpin with the Comeback Kids.

  • Also on Week 27 is our Doubles tournament. Doubles pairs are matched up highest average to lowest average, second highest to second lowest, etc. You bowl with your regular team. Winning pairs have the greatest combined pins over average. Non-participating bowlers contribute zero to the partnership’s total score. For lane assignments and doubles pairings, click over to the Doubles event page

  • Score results from Week 27 do not count towards final standings for the season, but they do count towards your personal stats.

Week 28 – 9-Pin No Tap "Fun Night"  (April 7, 2010)
Lane assignments are based on each team's FINAL AVERAGE (not standings) for the season, using team averages from Week 26 results (PDF), because that is the last week our scores counted for anything. Those averages are then sorted, then lanes are assigned in order. Click over to the Fun Night Event page for the info!! (Tip! The link to this event page is also on the home page.)

League Rule Changes for Next Season?
Please click over to the rules change suggestion page for two questions that have arisen. Issues will be voted on at the pre-season meeting held in late August.

Officer Nominations and Elections
Just a reminder that at this season's pre-season meeting back in September, we had agreed to change when our league officers are to be re-elected. In the past, nominations were done at the banquet, and then the election/voting was held at the next pre-season meeting. However, this does not permit any new officers from getting up to speed on their jobs. So we agreed that starting this season, the voting should be done at the banquet, so that the new officers have all summer to make the transition and can attend the officers training meeting at Plaza in August.

Week 20 – February 10, 2010

Splits
Dave made the 4-7-8.

Week 22 (Feb 24) is a Position Round

Banquet Planning Starting Soon
Can't believe the season has gone by so quickly... but we're already down to less than 10 weeks remaining. Which means our annual banquet will be coming up shortly as well. Week 28 is on April 7, and the banquet usually takes place on the Friday of the following week (i.e. April 16). Last year's venue worked out well (Timber Wolf Lodge on Plymouth Rd in Redford), and the food was tasty, so that is our banquet planner's first choice again this year. Consider it a "definite maybe" for now...  When arrangements are confirmed, the exact date and location will be posted here.

Metro Detroit USBC Women's Tournament
Our "Pink Ladies" team is confirmed to bowl in this tournament on Saturday March 6, at 1pm. The Pink Ladies are Denise D (Cha-Cha), Denise G (Frenchie), Kathy (Rizzo), Jill, and June.  The tournament location is Century Bowl in Waterford, 7145 Highland Rd.  Please join us for moral support, and maybe a beer or two!

Roster Change: Team Trouble
You've probably noticed by now that Mary hasn't been on the score sheet the last several weeks. She had a scheduling conflict with a class, so stepped down for the rest of the semester. She'll be back though!  In the meantime, the guys on Trouble must use the score from the Vacant spot each week, due to the "mixed" rules for our league, as the Vacancy represents a woman's score.

Week 17 – January 20, 2010

Week 18 (Jan 27) is a Position Round

Winter Cold and Your Bowling Ball

A few reminders, if you have left your bowling ball in your car for the day, out in the cold:

  • COLD bowling balls CAN crack or chip. Allow them to warm up before using them.

  • If a cold ball is exposed too quickly to the warmer indoor air, "sweat" (water condensation) can form on the ball due to the differences in temperature. Water and lane oil likely don't mix too well, and therefore your ball may not react properly on the lane.

  • To avoid this condensation, leave your ball covered up IN THE BAG while it all returns to room temperature. (Thus avoiding the warm air hitting the cold surface of the ball.) This means you need to arrive at the bowling alley a bit earlier to give your ball time to warm up.

January 1, 2010 – Happy New Year!

February is "Bowl for the Cure"® Month

February is traditionally known as Bowl for the Cure® month (i.e. "BFTC"), where bowlers across the nation pitch in with awareness and fundraising efforts to continue fighting against breast cancer.

Participation is completely voluntary. Common ways to help out are to play in a specially-designated BFTC event at a bowling center near you, or to sign up sponsors who pledge a certain per-pin $ amount (for example, a nickel or 10 cents a pin) based on your series score for a designated league bowling night. For example, in a nickel-per-pin pledge, a series of 470 would be a donation of $23.50. If you are interested in getting personal per-pin pledges, please email me (league secretary) and I'll help you get the forms to use.

Metro Detroit USBC Women's Championship

This year this tournament is at Century Bowl in Waterford (7145 Highland Rd, also known as M59), on Saturdays and Sundays from February 6 thru March 7. Squad times are 9am and 1pm each day. Note: The 9am sessions are designated non-smoking. Reserved spots must be paid for by January 15, although entries close on March 7.

Teams are 5-person. All participants must be certified in USBC.  The cost is $22 per bowler.  There are three average divisions so you competing against bowlers with similar ability; and averages must be based on at least 21 games completed by Dec 31 2009. Doubles and singles events are available -but note that a) these cost extra ($22 per bowler) and b) these are additional games, over and above your regular squad time. Also, entering jackpots for actual and hcp scores is an additional cost ($2 per bowler). Complete event rules are on the application form.

If you are interested in bringing a team, contact me for a copy of the entry form. Or, you can download a copy of the form as a PDF file from the Metro Detroit USBC web site at http://mdusbc.com/tournaments.htm
