March 23 – Week 25

Season Champs
It was a battle between first half winner Alley Oops and second half winner Rock-n-Roll Country-n-Soul. RRCS took it away to be our season champs. Congratulations!

Doubles Results
The pair of Kevin Murphy and Kathie O'Brien scored the most pins over average, with a combined total of 109. All positions receive a payout at the banquet. For more scoring detail than you though you ever wanted to see, the complete scoring results are posted here

High Rollers (200 or higher)

  • Sue Hodor's Game 3 score of 219 qualifies her for a WIBC high game award for scoring 200 or better with an average of 150 or less. However, WIBC will honor this award just once per season, and Sue already earned it back on Week 20. Sue, you can't get another pin, but "Congratulations" just the same.

  • Kevin Murphy rolled a 233 in Game 1 and a 220 in Game 3. Smokin'!

  • Ray Card rolled a 209 in Game 1.  Nice game!

Splitsville
Norvin Cronk picked up the 5-7.
Denise Dunn made the 6-7-10.
Kevin Murphy made the 4-8-10.
Ed Henderson picked up the 2-4-10.

Banquet is Friday April 8 at 7:00 pm at Steak and Ale
The room will be open at 7pm, and dinner orders will be taken as soon as everyone is present. Also in the course of the evening, we will be soliciting nominations for next year's league officers and asking if there should be any changes made to the league bylaws. Note that these are just nominations, and that voting on these issues will take place at the next pre-season meeting in September.

Thanks to our "fun and games" hosts!
Thank you Sue Bushway, Lori Vance, and Denise Goldie for handling Mystery jackpot duties and for overseeing the Lucky Strike games.

Detroit City Tournament News (Pink Ladies)
Our very own Pink Ladies squad is making a third appearance at the annual Detroit Women's City Tournament. Come out to cheer on Rizzo, Cha Cha, Frenchie, Winnie, and Suzy-Q on Sunday April 10 at 1:30pm. The tournament is at Cloverlanes in Livonia, at 28900 Schoolcraft (on the I-96 service drive between Middlebelt and Inkster Roads).

 April Birthdays
The season is over, but there's no reason why we still can't celebrate our four April birthdays. Check them out here

A Final Word on Teams, Captains, and Next Season

  • Team captains, you hold your team franchise (team spot) with the league (see ABC/WIBC rule 104b). The league secretary will be contacting you before the start of next season to find out if you intend to bring your team back or not, and what your roster will be. Look for this sometime in August.

  • Next season starts either September 7 or 14.

  • A pre-season meeting will be held the week prior to Week 1.  At the meeting we will confirm league bylaws, vote on any changes to the bylaws, vote on officers for the new season (who are to be nominated at this year's banquet), and hand out sanction applications for 2005-06 (which will be under USBC). So mark your calendars, watch your email (or voice mail) in August, and we'll see you then!

Thank you for bowling, and see you next season!

March 16 – Week 24

The winner of the second half of the season is....
Rock-n-Roll Country-n-Soul.  Congratulations to June, Sue, and Vince!

With the completion of Week 24, team standings and scores for prizes are locked in for the season. To see the results, go to the final standings page and the season-end reports page. Week 25 counts for personal stats and ABC/WIBC awards but it does not affect your team standing.

Doubles Tournament Next Week (March 23)
In case you missed it in previous weeks' newsletters, Week 25 is a doubles tournament.

We will also still play Mystery and Lucky Strike.  For Lucky Strike, if the first lucky ticket holder does not get a strike, we'll keep pulling tickets until the money is gone or until someone gets a strike!

Splitsville
Ray Card got the 5-8-10!.
Tony Kryka made the 9-10 and a 2-7!
Norvin Cronk made the 5-7!

High Rollers (200 and higher)
Two of our 200-bowlers bowled their you-know-whats off last night. Kevin Murphy rolled a 267 in Game 1 and Bob Olson rolled a 222 in Game 1 and a 256 in Game 3. Simply awesome but can you believe the scores don't qualify for an official ABC award? Great bowling, guys!!
Our other high rollers this week were Greg Skotzke with a 223 in Game 1 and Kurt Bowers with a 207 in Game 3.

March 9 – Week 23

Just Two Weeks Left
Week 24 is our final position round. It is the last session of the second half, and the team at the top of the standings after bowling will be the winner of the second half.
Week 25 is a rolloff for overall season champ (winner of 1st half vs. winner of 2nd half) and a doubles tournament for all bowlers. The doubles event has an information page all of its own if you want more information. Check it out here. (A link to the same page is also on this site's home page.)

Splitsville
Dan Finkelstein made the 2-7-10.
Kurt Bowers made the 5-7!
Ray Card made the 6-7-10.

Awards? High Rollers?
Nothing this week.

March 2 – Week 22

Banquet Information
As announced last week, the banquet will be held at Steak and Ale, on Ann Arbor Road at I-275. See the banquet page for more information. All we need this year is a headcount - and next week Denise Dunn will circulate a signup sheet to get the count. We will be ordering at the restaurant after we're seated, so there is no need to pre-select your entree this year. Please arrive by 7pm so we can all order together.

Just Three Weeks Remaining
Week 23 is a "normal" week, Week 24 is our final position round (and the team at the top of the standings after bowling will be the winner of the second half), and Week 25 is a rolloff for overall season champ (winner of 1st half vs. winner of 2nd half) and a doubles tournament for all bowlers. More details on that next week.

Splitsville
None reported.

High Rollers (200 and higher)
Once again, it's the usual suspects!  ;)  Kevin Murphy with 212 in Game 1. Ray Card with 205 in Game 3. Bob Olson with 200 in Game 2.  Nice games, gentlemen!

February 16 – Week 20

Tournament News
Shammy Burt has been running since October, but I finally got hold of pertinent details, and updated the tournament list. Two new tournaments have also been added to the list:

  • The 14th Annual Budweiser Team Classic is for 5-member mixed teams, and each team receives a large pepperoni pizza. Entry fee is $26 per bowler.

  • Ducat's 26th "Nine is Fine" Singles Tournament is a 9-pin no-tap style contest. Get nine pins on the first ball and receive a strike. Entry fee is $18 per bowler.

Entry forms for all three of these tournaments are available at Plaza Lanes.

ABC/WIBC Achievement Awards
Sue Hodor has earned WIBC's "200 game" award pin (for averages 150 or lower) for her Game 2 score of 201.
Nancy Waskiewicz has earned a "500 high series" award pin (for averages 140 or lower) for her 514 series.

Splitsville
Tony Kryka (recently back from surgery!) got the 5-7.
Kathy Wyrwas made the 1-2-4-10 washout.

High Rollers (200 or higher)
Kevin Murphy rolled 200+ in all three games. Ray Card got a 212 in Game 3. Sue Hodor rolled a 201 in Game 2.

February 9 – Week 19

Position Round Next Week
Week 20 is our second-to-last position round of the season. As always, subs are welcome to bowl but they should be signed in as pacers.

Bowl For The Cure®
Is anyone interested in contributing to this fundraiser? You can either find people to pledge a penny per pin (or other amount) for your scores that night.  Or, if you like, you can sign in on Linda Marler's pledge sheet - she has been collecting pledges and welcomes any fellow league members. February 23 will be our Bowl For The Cure® night.

What Are "Unearned Points"?
I've been asked this question in recent weeks, since a couple of our teams have shown unearned points on the standings sheet. Unearned points happen when a team bowling the BYE team does not bowl the minimum number of pins (30 less than the team average) to "earn" the win for a game. In effect, these are games "lost" to the BYE team.

Splitsville
Vince Hoh got the 5-10.
Sue Bushway also got the 5-10!
Jill Conway made the 3-10.
Ed Henderson also made the 3-10!
Ray Card made the 5-7 and also made the 1-2-10 washout.

High Rollers (200 or higher)
Santo Lupo rolled 234 in Game 1 and 247 in Game 3, making a 702 series!
Ray Card rolled a 247 in Game 3.  Ray left no open frames in this game. In fact, at one point he had six strikes in a row!
Kurt Bowers bowled a 238 in Game 2.
Ed Henderson rolled 236 in Game 3.

ABC/WIBC Awards
Ed Henderson's Game 3 score of 236 has earned a "75 pins over average" award (a patch) from ABC (USBC).
Santo Lupo earned an ABC "700 Series" award (a patch) for his 702 series tonight. (Note: There is an ABC rule that a bowler must participate in 2/3 of all games in a season to be eligible for awards, and these were Santo's first 3 games with us this year, so we'll see what happens when I report the award.)

February 2 – Week 18

Splitsville
Kathy Wyrwas made the 1-6-7-9 washout.

High Rollers
Bob Olson rolled 211 in Game 1 and a 221 in Game 3.
Ed Henderson bowled a 211 in Game 2.

In Memoriam
Our condolences go out to Ray Card and his family on the passing of his son Doug on January 29 after a brief and unexpected battle with cancer. The league sent a basket of mixed greenery to the family.

January 26 – Week 17

The Bowl.com Web Site Has a New Look
With a new year and a new sanctioning body (the USBC), the www.bowl.com web site has a fresh new look. Everything is still there, and mostly in the same place. (Except there are no longer separate tabs for ABC and WIBC.) Take a moment to look around and see what's new.

Bowl For The Cure
Yes, it's that time of year again. As you may recall, Bowl For The Cure®  is a year-round fund-raising and breast cancer awareness initiative by WIBC, in partnership with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

February is traditionally the official Bowl For The Cure® month. I am going to order a pledge kit for our league and will pick a day in February for when our per-pin pledges will count. If you are interested in participating, please let me know

To learn more, you can visit the official Bowl For The Cure® web site

Wishing A Speedy Recovery To...
... Tony Kryka.  Glad to hear you're on the mend after your recent unexpected appendectomy and hospital stay. Take it easy, and we hope to see you back at bowling in a few weeks. Happy birthday too (21st).

January 12 – Week 15

Position Round Next Week!
Week 16 is yet another position round. As always, subs are welcome but should be signed in as pacers. Their scores do help their own stats.

Banquet Planning Gearing Up
Denise Dunn, as this season's vice-president, will be planning our season-end banquet. Start thinking of ideas, and give Denise any suggestions (or help) you may have. The banquet is usually 1 or 2 Fridays after the final week of bowling (March 23). This year that puts us very close to Good Friday and Easter (March 25 and 27), so stay tuned for the actual date.

Splitsville
Kurt Bowers made the 3-10.
Sue Hodor also made the 3-10.
Ray Card knocked down a 3-6-7-10.

High Rollers
The only 200 score this week goes to Kathy Wyrwas, who rolled 218 in Game 3. (No, I wasn't secretly practicing during my weeks off!)

ABC/WIBC Honor Scores
The 200 game award can be given out just once per season, but the 75 pins over average can be awarded multiple times. Kathy's 218 gets her another over-average patch from WIBC.

January 5 – Week 14

GDBA Semi-Annual Meeting is January 16, 1:00pm.

"To all delegates, Presidents, and/or Secretaries: Be sure your league is represented at your association's Semi-Annual meeting. You are the ruling body and should have a representative present."

So says the recent notice received about this meeting. Agenda includes: approval of the 2003-04 auditors' report (i.e. financial statement for GDBA) and nominations for GDBA directors and officers.  The meeting will be held Jan 16 at 1pm at Renaissance Family Bowling Center, 19600 Woodward Ave, Detroit.  (About 1/3 mile north of 7 Mile Rd.) Phone is (313)368-5123.

If you would like a copy of the 2003-04 financial report, please contact the GDBA office at (888)753-6350.

It's Official: The USBC Is Now Operational
As of January 1, ABC and WIBC have ceased to exist. The new sanctioning body for our sport is the United States Bowling Congress. Nothing visible is changing for our league just yet, and there has been no word yet from GDBA and DWBA if they are also merging. (Although, the mid-season statistics reports that must be submitted are going to the same address for both men and women. Perhaps that's a hint.)  Your ABC and WIBC sanction cards are still valid at tournaments for the remainder of this season. For complete reference information about USBC, check out the USBC area of the bowl.com website

Splitsville
Ray Card made the 3-6-7-10.
Kathie O'Brien made the 5-6.
Denise Durkin made both the 6-7 and 3-10.

High Rollers
Congratulations to this week's "high rollers" (bowling a 200 or more):  Kevin Murphy (all three games!), Ed Henderson (Game 3), Bob Olson (Game 1), Kathy Wyrwas (Game 2), and Ray Card (Game 3).

ABC/WIBC Honor Scores
Kathy Wyrwas's Game 2 score of 212 nets her two WIBC awards: 75 pins over average (patch), and 200-game for <150 averages (pin).

 January Birthdays
Check out the birthday list to see who is celebrating this month!

December 29, 2004

Prize Fund Is Posted
This year's proposed prize fund (an Excel spreadsheet) is now available for your review. (A link to the file is also on this site's home page.) Please review it so you know the breakdown of money going into each award category. If you have any questions, please discuss among your team or with one of the league officers. The league Board of Directors (team captains + officers) will vote on the prize fund to accept it or not, or make any changes.

No Bowling December 29
I'm sure you know we're all still on holiday break. See you next week on January 5.

Wishing everyone a very happy ~and safe~ New Year.

December 15, 2004 – Week 13

Splitsville
Dan Finkelstein got the 4-10!
Ed Henderson was faced with the Big 4 (4-7-6-10) but left the 4. (Tip: You get a patch from ABC/WIBC if you make the Big 4!
Sue Bushway made the 3-10!

High Rollers
Ray Card bowled a 232 in Game 1!
Bob Olson bowled a 201 in Game 2!

Record High Strike Jackpot Comes To An End
In honor of our holiday celebration, we were going to pull tickets till either the money was gone or someone got a strike. At the start of the night, the jackpot was $219! (The highest ever!) The first ticket pulled was one of several bought jointly by Eddie and Kevin. When it was Ed's turn to bowl, he declined the rights to the ticket, saying it was Kevin's. Ed got 7 pins, which would have given him $7 and would have let us pull another ticket to keep going. But Kevin was up to bowl next, and got the strike.

No Bowling December 22 and 29
We will be off a couple of weeks over the holidays. The season resumes on January 5. Happy Holidays!
