April 2, 2008 – Week 28 (Fun Night)

Fun Night Results
Complete scoring results can be found both on the usual standings sheet page and on the Fun Night Event page. Note that the team scores don't matter and don't count for anything, as tonight was a challenge on individual scratch scores.

Prize money will be awarded to the highest male score and the highest female scratch score.

  • For the men, we *thought* it was going to be Santo Lupo, until Dennis Zagor blew everyone away with his 300 game in Game 3!
  • For the women, Wendy Cherry gets the high score award for her 219 in Game 3!

Check out some snapshots here of a few of us having fun on this last night of the season!!

(CLICK for bigger images! Then use the Prev and Next links on each page to move around within the set.)

Banquet April 11
See you at Steak and Ale next Friday (April 11) at 7pm!

March 27, 2008 – Week 27 (Rolloff and Doubles)

Rolloff Winner is...

Triple-S!!!

Triple S took 5 points to Beer Nuts' 2 points.

Doubles Winners are...

Santo and Lil, with 140 pins over!!!

Check out the Doubles Event page for everyone's results.

Lane Assignments for Fun Night (9-Pin No Tap): April 2, 2008
Since this night is all in fun, let's do something completely random for lane assignments.....
Let's do a basic position round type pairing for the Fun Night, but based on each team's FINAL AVERAGE (not standings) for the season. I am using team averages from Week 27 results (PDF), because that is the last week our scores counted for anything. Then once those averages are sorted, we'll go down the list to assign lanes. See the Fun Night Event page for the info!!  (Tip! The link to this event page is also on the home page.)

Banquet April 11
Just a reminder that our end-of-season banquet is Friday April 11 at 7pm at Steak and Ale in Plymouth. See the banquet page if you need a map. Also don't forget that at the banquet we carry out a little bit of league business: we solicit officer nominations for next season, and we solicit rule change suggestions for next season as well. (There have been a couple suggestions recently, in addition to the known issues posted by your secretary.) This is YOUR league, so you might want to brush up on the rules and suggestions... we'll be making these decisions at the pre-season meeting on September 3.

Rule Change Suggestions for 2008-2009
Two new ideas have been submitted for our league's consideration and discussion for next season. Please check out the Suggestion Box page for the issues.

Important Dates for 2008-2009
Our contract for next year has been signed and filed. Thank you Team Captains for reserving your team's spot! Let's all put some effort into filling out our vacancies and have a 100% full roster come September. Important dates for next season are:

  • Pre-season league meeting: Sept 3, 2008.  **Please make plans now to attend!! Your voice is needed!!

  • First night of bowling:  Sept 10, 2008.

  • No bowling, holiday time off:  Nov 26, Dec 24, and Dec 31.

  • Holiday food party and $5/team holiday cash: Dec 17.

  • Last night of bowling (Week 28):  April 1, 2009.

USBC Achievement Awards
Nancy Telling receives a repeat "200 game" recognition for bowling a 205 in Game 3. Lil Path earned another "160" game recognition for a score of 168 in Game 3.  No patches to be awarded though, as both women have already earned those patches this season.

Super Splits
Lil Path made the 5-7-8.
Denise Dunn got the 3-10.

April Birthdays!!
We haven't had any birthdays lately, but there are a few in April!  Check out who over on the birthday page....

March 19, 2008 – Week 26

Second Half Winner is...

Triple-S!!!

Congratulations to Sue, June, and Santo!!  Next week Triple S squares off with the first-half winners Beer Nuts for league champ.

Final Season Standings
Beer Nuts takes 1st place in overall points!!  Each team's points from the first half and second half are added together to determine the overall season standings. Check out the Final Standings page to see where all the teams ended up!

Swapping Weeks? Nope!
The two teams who requested a potential swap did not end up as contenders in next week's rolloff. Therefore, Weeks 27 and 28 REMAIN as they were originally scheduled.  Week 27 (March 26) is the roll-off and doubles. Week 28 (April 2) is the fun night, a 9-pin no-tap night.

USBC Achievement Awards
Theresa Belser rolled another 180+ game, but she already earned the patch for that award this season.

Super Splits
Dianne Zagor made the 4-6 in Game 1.

Get Well Soon, Tony!
As most of us noticed, team Alley Oops was not in attendance last night. Kurt emailed a note (to both me and Tony) that he was sick and would not be bowling. And Tony and Guyla had called Plaza to say they would not be coming. Unfortunately, their messages did not reach each other. What happened was, Tony had to have surgery to remove a blood clot from an artery in his leg. He is supposed to be going home on Friday. Please keep him in your thoughts and wish him a speedy recovery!!

March 12, 2008 – Week 25

We're Almost Done!
Yes, it is here next week, the last *regular* night of bowling. Next week (Week 26, March 19) is a position round. Whichever team is in first place at the end of the night will be the winner of the second half, and it looks like it will be a very close contest!  Subs are welcome to bowl on a Position Round night, but they will pace only.

Swapping Weeks Reminder
Just to remind you that, based on the standings when we complete next week's games (Week 26), we may or may not be swapping the events for Weeks 27 and 28. Team Alley Oops also reported that none of them will be available to bowl on Week 27 (prior out of town commitments), so they would like the same choice extended to them as we are currently waiting on for Pin Action. Meaning, if either Pin Action or Alley Oops wins the second half, then we are swapping the final two weeks so they can bowl as a team on the roll-off night.

Week 28 (27?) Fun Event is Named
How about doing a 9-Pin No-Tap night for our Fun Night? Everyone participates in all three games!!  The Fun Night is usually Week 28 (April 2), but it could be Week 27 (March 26) this year, depending on Week 26 (March 19) as described above.

Any Suggestions for League Rule Amendments?
Before we put our gear away for the season --wait, you're not gonna bowl over the summer?-- and as long as you all are thinking about bowling every week -- Has anyone considered any rule amendments they would like to see for next season?  Don't forget that there is a Rule Change Suggestion Box page here on this site, and will be open during our off months too. There are some issues currently posted that we will need your opinion on at the next pre-season meeting in September, so be sure to check them out.

2008-2009 League Contract and Scheduling
Plaza Lanes has provided our officers with a league contract for next year. Save the following dates on your calendar!!

  • Pre-season league meeting: Sept 3, 2008.  **Please make plans now to attend!! Your voice is needed!!

  • First night of bowling:  Sept 10, 2008.

  • No bowling, holiday time off:  Nov 26, Dec 24, and Dec 31.

  • Holiday food party: Dec 17.

  • Last night of bowling (Week 27; we lost our free Week 28):  March 25, 2009.

Also, Plaza is raising our lineage fee ever so slightly, by 25 cents. The new rate that our league will be paying Plaza next season will be $6.25 per bowler per night. We can't say at the moment whether this will or will not affect our weekly league dues; the Treasurer needs to look over our budget -- but be assured the decision will be made at the pre-season meeting!!
**I have listed this issue on the Suggestion Box page as a reminder.

USBC Achievement Awards
Denise Dunn got her 200 patch! She rolled 200 exactly in Game 2.
Sue Hodor also earned a 200 patch tonight, for her 212 score in Game 1.
Congrats Ladies!

Super Splits
Tony Kryka made the 4-7.
Dan Finkelstein made the 5-7-9.
Dennis Todic picked up the 6-7-10.

March 5, 2008 – Week 24

Last Chance for Subs to Help a Team - on Week 25
The end of the half is fast approaching. Week 26 is the end of the second half, and therefore is a position round. As always, subs are welcome to bowl that night, but they will pace only. If any subs would like to help out a team, then Week 25 is the night to do it.

Banquet Location Selected!
We are returning to Steak and Ale for our banquet on April 11. See the banquet page for details.

Swapping Weeks 27-28: Board of Directors Vote Results
A request was made to swap the purposes of Weeks 27 (roll-off and doubles) and 28 (fun night). A Board of Directors vote was taken to find out everyone's opinion. The voting results are as follows:

Opinion Tally
Go ahead and swap Weeks 27-28 now. Gives everyone advance notice of the change. 5
Wait till Week 26 results to see if it would even be an issue (if his team is not the second-half winner, its irrelevant), and decide then. 7
Leave the schedule alone. 1

As the numbers show, we will wait until we have Week 26 results to make the decision. To name names now, it was Dan on Team Pin Action who made the request to switch weeks. Dan is out of town on Week 27. If his team is the second-half winner, we will be swapping Weeks 27-28 so that Dan can still help his team in the roll-off, which will be Week 28 instead. Stay tuned; it's a wait-and-see decision.  Thank you for considering the issue and for your vote.

Super Splits
June Cannon made the 5-10.
Lou Abraham made the 6-7-10.
Dan Finkelstein tamed the 2-7-10.

February 27, 2008 – Week 23

It's Bowl for the Cure Season
February is the traditional month for benefits held in the name of Bowl For the Cure (although events can be scheduled for any month). You can participate as a team or as an individual. The most common form of benefit is for bowlers to secure per-pin pledges for their scores on a given night. Do you want to participate as a league, team, or individual? Please let the secretary know!  I've got forms ready for your use.
You can learn more about Bowl for the Cure events here:  http://www.bowl.com/cure/main.aspx

Save the Date: April 11.  End of Season Banquet.
We're not quite sure of the location yet, but we do have a date for this year's banquet.  Please mark Friday April 11 on your calendars. The banquet page is now active (and linked from the Home page here), and we'll have more information very soon on where we will be dining. (Finding a place within our budget and with a separate room has been a challenge!)

USBC Achievement Awards

  • Lil Path earned a 160-game patch for her score of 160 in Game 3.

  • Theresa Belser rolled a game that would have earned a 180-game patch, for her score of 182 in Game 3. Theresa got this patch already this season, and you can get only one per season. The achievement score will still be on official record.

  • Kurt Bowers was on fire!!  He rolled two 200 games, but already earned the patch for that earlier this season. He will receive a NEW patch for tonight's scores: a 140-pin over series patch!  Yes, Kurt bowled 152 pins over his average!! Outstanding.

Ladies! Is anyone getting a team together to play at Nationals? It's right in our backyard this year!  To register, go to www.usbcwomenschampionships.com, then click on "Online Reservations" and fill out the form. Even if you don't have a team, you can offer your services as a substitute!  On the event site, look for the link to "Sub Central" near the page header, and post a message that you are available. Or, you can search for a spot already in need of a sub. **Please note there is a tournament rule that prohibits smoking and alcoholic beverages during practice and competition.

Why Can't I Make My Ball Hook?
First thing to find out is, is the ball even designed to hook?  Some balls are drilled as "straight" balls and simply won't hook. Perhaps it was not drilled properly to match the inner weight block. Maybe your line isn't hitting the lane oil pattern right, or maybe the cover stock isn't reacting properly with the oil. Or perhaps some aspect of your delivery is working against the ball's ability to hook. The pro shop can help you determine if the ball is supposed to hook or not, and can also help you fine-tune your delivery to take advantage of what the ball can really do for your game. Following are some how-to articles you might also find helpful.

If you have any suggestions, please let Denise know (send her an email here).

Standing Sheet Correction for Week 15

Plaza Lanes had notified me of a scoring discrepancy in our standings sheets from Weeks 14 to 15. (They get a copy of the standings every week to compare to the data in their computer.) They noticed that on the Week 14 sheet, Team Trouble was listed at the top of the page with 7 points won, and on the Week 15 sheet, Trouble had only a total of 2 points won. The points should never decrease, so something went wrong! The only other change I made on Week 14 was to delete bowler Jared from Trouble's team roster, which was supposed to be effective going into Week 14. This may be the culprit.

Upon further investigation:
The problem was indeed caused by removing former Trouble team member Jared from the team roster. Apparently I deleted him after I ran the Week 14 reports but prior to switching to Week 15, which knocked out his scores for Week 14 and made it look like the Week 15 points were different than what they really were. To correct this problem, I readded Jared for Week 14, and reran the Week 14 standings sheet (the original was correct). I then switched to Week 15, checked that Jared was not on the roster (it was vacant), confirmed that bowler scores were entered correctly (they were), then reran the Week 15 standings sheet. The point totals are now correct and the corrected report is posted on the standings sheet page. Sorry for any confusion.

Start Time Reminder
Just a reminder that Game 1 (not practice) starts at 5:15pm sharp. Lanes open for practice at 5:00pm. If there are no pins spotted but the lights are on, just throw a ball and the pinspotter will sweep and set a full rack. Or, use the computer menu to cycle the pinspotter (click the Help button to find that control).  Our contract gives us rights to the lanes only until 7:15pm. Last night we had teams still bowling after 7:25, even after 7:30. A few minutes over isn't bad, but that was pretty extreme. I don't want to be hearing of any complaints from the league who bowls after us. Please try to arrive promptly and be ready to bowl at 5:15pm so we can all be sure to finish close to our contract time. Thank you!!
*This is reminder from your league secretary, not Plaza Lanes. Let's self-adjust before the house finds it necessary to say something to us.*
