Lane Assignments for Fun Night (9-Pin No Tap): April 8, 2008
Lane assignments are based on each team's FINAL AVERAGE (not standings) for the season, using team averages from Week 27 results (PDF), because that is the last week our scores counted for anything. Those averages are then sorted, then lanes are assigned in order. Click over to the Fun Night Event page for the info!! (Tip! The link to this event page is also on the home page.)

Banquet April 17
Just a reminder that our end-of-season banquet is Friday April 18 at 7pm at the Timber Wolf Lodge in Redford. See the banquet page if you need a map. Also don't forget that at the banquet we carry out a little bit of league business: we solicit officer nominations for next season, and we solicit rule change suggestions for next season as well.

Metro Detroit USBC Women's Championship
Formerly known as the DWBA Detroit City Tournament, this is the event our "Pink Ladies" team usually takes part in. This year it's being held at Cherry Hill Lanes in Dearborn Heights (300 N. Inkster Rd), on Saturdays and Sundays from February 28 thru March 22. The Pink Ladies will be participating again this year, and we hope you can come cheer them on and provide lots of team spirit. The exact squad date is yet tbd (but it WILL be a Saturday at 1pm).

If any other women are interested in fielding a team, don't delay in turning in the tournament application form (click for PDF form). Guaranteed reserved spots were due by the end of January. Teams are 5-person; all participants must be certified in USBC; the cost is $20; there are three average divisions so you competing against bowlers with similar ability; and averages must be based on at least 21 games completed by Dec 31 2008. Doubles and singles events are available -but note that a) these cost extra and b) you must bowl these in additional games, over and above your regular squad time. Complete event rules are on the application form.

It's Bowl For the Cure® Month

February is traditionally known as Bowl for the Cure® month (i.e. "BFTC"), where bowlers across the nation pitch in with awareness and fundraising efforts to fight against breast cancer. In February 2008, Metro Detroit USBC bowlers collectively donated over $19,000; here's an article with the details: http://www.bowl.com/articleView.aspx?i=14284&f=3

Participation is completely voluntary. Common ways to help out are to play in a specially-designated BFTC event at a bowling center near you, or to sign up sponsors who pledge a certain per-pin $ amount (for example, a nickel or 10 cents a pin) based on your series score for a designated league bowling night. For example, in a nickel-per-pin pledge, a series of 470 would be a donation of $23.50. If you are interested in getting personal per-pin pledges, please email me (league secretary) and I'll help you get the forms to use.

Upcoming organized BFTC events in the area are:  February 15 @ Indian Lanes in Wyandotte and February 28 @ Fairlanes in Madison Heights . (Note the Feb28 date is a smoke-free event.)  The Metro Detroit USBC web site's home page has flyers available for these events -- look for the PINK highlighted block under the photos.

Week 18 – January 28, 2009

IMPORTANT REMINDER!!!  Our Lane Times
Thank you everybody for your cooperation at getting bowling underway and finishing at a decent time. Let's do it again next week!!  Remember, if the lanes are not ready for practice at 5pm, please ask the counter to turn them on, so that we can start on time at 5:15 -- and therefore finish on time by 7:15pm.

Super Splits
Melisa Shellenbarger made the 5-10.
Ray Card made the 5-7.
Kevin Murphy picked up the 1-2-10 washout.
Stacey Liddy made the 5-10.

USBC Achievement Awards

  • Theresa Belser bowled 207 in Game 1, which earned her both a 200-game patch and a 75 pins over average award.

  • Renee Bugosh bowled 224 in Game 2, which also earned her a 200-game patch and a 75 pins over average award.

  • Kathy Wyrwas bowled 201 in Game 2 to earn her 200-game patch plus a 500-series pin.

  • Santo Lupo earned a 600-series pin for his series total of 625.

Week 17 – January 21, 2009

IMPORTANT REMINDER!!!  Our Lane Times
While this is a fun informal league, we do need everyone's renewed attentiveness towards the clock. Lanes are switched on for practice at 5:00pm, and switched over to game play at 5:15pm. Socialize as much as you want to before and during bowling, HOWEVER please keep an eye on the clock!!!  We are under contract with Plaza Lanes to be DONE bowling at 7:15pm. The league following us is under contract to have the lanes at 7:30pm. We need to be out of their way so we are not impinging on their time.
**On Week 16, people were still bowling at 7:30, and there were complaints made and heard that Plaza staff is aware of. And on Week 17, two pairs of lanes finished bowling b/w 7:25-7:35 - with teams from the next league hovering behind.  Let's get this under control so that other leagues don't have anything to complain about.

  • If our lanes are not ready at 5:15pm, please ask the counter staff to switch them over - regardless of how much practice time is left. We need to start on time so that we can finish on time. We are also reminding the staff to please have our lanes on for practice at 5:00 sharp, so that you can have the full 15 minutes of practice time.

  • You are not obligated to wait for bowlers who are running late. It is not a rule. In fact, we don't have the luxury of time for you to wait for very long. If you wait for a bit, please speed up and catch up the rest of the night so that you can still finish close to 7:15-7:20ish. Don't forget the rule we DO have (league rule #16, PDF file) -- is that if the person arrives within the first three frames, they can still bowl that game. If you are not sure when a bowler will be arriving, change them to Blind (-10 pins from their average) and start bowling. If they arrive within the first three frames, un-blind them (their frames will be cleared), and the scoring computer will help them catch up.

  • If you are going to be late, please contact one of your teammates so that they can start on time, or call Plaza Lanes at (734)453-4880. If you call Plaza, please give them enough information so that they can get the message to the right people. For example, "Hello, I bowl in the Unisys Mixed league at 5:15. Could you tell Team (name) on Lane ##, or one of the officers, that I am running late and that they should start without me?"

Thank you for your cooperation!

Position Round is Next Week (Jan 28)!!
Substitutes are welcome to participate (adds to their personal stats), but they will be pacers only (their score does not help the team).

Rule Change Suggestions for 2009-2010 Season
Happy with the rules that we agreed on for this season? Do you want to see anything done differently? Please submit your suggestions to the league on our rule change suggestion page. We can discuss the suggestions at any time. At next season's pre-season meeting (usually 1 or 2 weeks prior to Week 1) we will vote as a league to adopt any of the suggestions, or not.

January 14: Zero Degree Temperatures and Your Bowling Ball

A few reminders, if you have left your bowling ball in your car for the day, out in the cold:

  • COLD bowling balls CAN crack or chip. Allow them to warm up before using them.

  • If a cold ball is exposed too quickly to warm air, "sweat" (water condensation) can form on the ball due to the differences in temperature. Water and lane oil likely don't mix too well, and therefore your ball may not react properly on the lane. Allow the ball to warm up before using it.

  • To avoid this condensation, leave your ball covered up IN THE BAG while it all returns to room temperature. (Thus avoiding the warm air hitting the cold surface of the ball.) This means you need to arrive at the bowling alley a bit earlier to give your ball time to warm up.

Week 15 – January 7, 2009

New Substitute Bowler Available
Mike Crocket sub'd for Team 5:00 Somewhere on January 7, and is available to sub for other teams on future weeks as well. He also bowls on the Saturday night VFW Mixed League at Plaza, and has a 2008 book average of 144.
